The first Tysk-Norsk (German-Norwegian) literary festival attracted over 4,700 literature enthusiasts to Oslo’s House of Literature. This is the first time that a Frankfurter Buchmesse Guest of Honour has organised a festival for its host in the run-up to the fair.
When does literary writing become political writing? We talked with the Turkish writer Aslı Erdoğan and the German author Annette Hess about the socio-political impact of their works.
East meets West: The seventh StoryDrive conference will take place in Beijing at the end of May. And, for all of those managing and monetising rights, the first RightsTech: Europe conference is the place to be in September.

| German-Norwegian #tysklitteraturfest in Oslo
|
| This is the first time that a Frankfurter Buchmesse Guest of Honour has organised a festival for its host in the run-up to the fair: During the three days of the “Towards Frankfurt” festival (26-28 April 2019), 70 events were held with a total of 105 participants, including 64 authors from Norway and 41 authors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Never before have this many German-language authors come together in Norway at the same time. See more photos of the event here.

| Interview with Aslı Erdoğan
|
| "This book wrote my destiny".
|
| The Turkish writer Aslı Erdoğan has been living in Germany for two years. In her home country she was in detention for 132 days. There, she is still under trial for terrorist propaganda together with eight other journalists, human rights activists and publishers who worked for the Kurdish-Turkish newspaper Özgür Gündem. Her poetic text The House of Stone about the infamous Istanbul prison Sansaryan Han seeks to find words for trauma.

| For the second time, Frankfurter Buchmesse and the MGIP Motovun Group of International Publishers are once again awarding the “Best Illustrated Book on Film” as part of the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2019.

| From 28 May to 1 June, the seventh StoryDrive conference will take place in China as part of a joint exhibition with the CIFTIS Beijing Fair. StoryDrive is dedicated to exploring new forms of collaboration and business models across media, cultural, and geographical boundaries.

| Post-war Germany in Literature
|
| "It’s more important than ever not to ease up on the culture of remembrance".
|
| As part of the author programme organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse together with the Goethe-Institut and supported by the Federal Foreign Office, seven German authors will travel to Turin for the 32nd Salone Internazionale del Libro (9-13 May) to present their works: Sasha Marianna Salzmann, Daniel Kehlmann, Jakob Nolte and others. Also travelling to Turin is Annette Hess to present her latest novel The German House, rights for which have already been sold in more than 20 countries. In the interview she told us about the reappraisal of one's own history, the challenge of an adequate translation, and the impact of her book abroad.

| Discussing the latest trends and new business models – the trade conference CONTEC Argentina (26 April) brought together more than 140 publishers, booksellers, and managers of digital platforms from Middle and South America, Spain, and Germany. The event was organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse in cooperation with the Buenos Aires International Book Fair.
