  The newsletter of Frankfurter Buchmesse
Issue 4 / 2021
Dear Sir or Madam,
The motto for Frankfurter Buchmesse 2021 “Re:connect” signals the relaunch of the publishing industry. This newsletter offers a few glimpses of what re:connecting might mean this year. First and foremost it means longing to meet colleagues, experiencing cultural events and being inspired by chance encounters again. Exhibitors can find all the information on how to participate this year below - the registration deadline is 31 May 2021. The Guest of Honour country Canada has just released a magazine which showcases the regions of Canada and the diversity of its literary landscapes, voices and genres, leaving the readers in anticipation for their presentation in October. Two publishers from Brazil and Mexico shared with us how the book markets in their region have developed during the pandemic and how they used Frankfurt Rights to stay connected in the industry.

Please join us in looking optimistically to the future: Re:connect - on the fairgrounds and at exciting events throughout the city.

Enjoy reading!

That’s because Frankfurter Buchmesse will once again offer face-to-face meetings on the fairgrounds from 20 to 24 October 2021. Please be assured that your safety comes first: If the book fair is called off or if, as an exhibitor, you cannot travel to Frankfurt due to the pandemic, no cancellation fees will be charged. This arrangement has been made possible by additional funds from the German government’s NEUSTART KULTUR programme.

Guest of Honour Canada
Discovering the literary diversity of Canada
As Guest of Honour at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2020 and 2021, Canada’s slogan is “Singular Plurality - Singulier Pluriel”. The 300+ Canadian publications appearing in German as part of the project impressively underscore the diversity of Canada. The vast country with many languages and many cultural realities is showcasing its literature extensively, focusing on its Indigenous literature, pronounced graphic novel and comics culture, queer literature, and politically engaged books. The new magazine, "Singular Plurality - Singulier Pluriel", illustrates the slogan in conversations, reports, and book launches, and is designed to spark a discussion with Canadian authors and illustrators about this literary diversity.

Frankfurt Rights
"The word that best describes the current situation is Reinvention."
In the past few months, Frankfurter Buchmesse has organised several digital workshops for publishers from Latin America, Arabic-language countries, Africa and Southeast Asia to support the participants in selling rights internationally - especially at this moment in time as the global pandemic continues. We spoke with two Latin American participants to gain insights into the Mexican and the Brazilian market and to hear if and how they benefited from the Frankfurt Rights International Workshop held by Frankfurter Buchmesse.
