Dear Sir or Madam,

Our ticket shop for private visitors is now open. Also, with the world book publishing’s 2019 trade show season moving into high gear, our colleagues have been busy travelling to and from the key events: We went to Berlin for an interview with Jonathan Landgrebe, CEO of Suhrkamp publishing house, flew to Texas for a panel on artificial intelligence at the SXSW Festival and finally arrived in London to talk to James Daunt, Managing Director of Waterstones. Are we never at home? Yes we are! For instance to celebrate the exciting partnership between THE ARTS+ and the B3 Biennial of the Moving Image.

Enjoy reading!

Interview

"We are publishing authors not books"

He manages the balancing act between literary ambition and bestseller suitability and upholds the tradition of one of the most important German publishing houses without losing sight of current trends: Jonathan Landgrebe has been the publisher of Suhrkamp Verlag since 2015. In an interview with Juergen Boos, Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse, Langrebe explains what Suhrkamp publishing house stands for today, why its focus on Eastern Europe is important, and why it publishes authors rather than books.

Book Trade

"They will not forgive you, if you fail"

James Daunt, CEO of Waterstones, does not believe in conventional branch concepts: for him the future belongs to individually managed bookstores – even in competition with online retailing. We met him in his flagship store at Piccadilly Circus in London to talk about the impact that his new owner Elliott Advisors has made, the threat posed by online giant Amazon, and his differentiated way of managing a bookshop chain.

Ethics in #AI

To bot or not to bot

How should robots be so that we humans feel comfortable with them? Why does sci-fi have such an impact on the design of robots? And will we all need Lovots? In conversation with robot psychologist Martina Mara, our AI expert Holger Volland examined these questions at SXSW Festival in Texas.
